374 855 death events were occurred
While the number of deaths was 375 367 in 2011, this number was 374 855 in 2012. 55% of deceased persons were males and 45% of deceased persons were females.
While crude death rate was 5,1‰ in 2011, this rate decreased to 5‰ in 2012. It means that while the number of deaths was 5,1 per thousand population in 2011, the number of deaths was 5 per thousand population in 2012. According to the Statistical Regions (SR) Level 1, West Marmara Region had the highest crude death rate with 7,3‰ and Southeast Anatolia Region had the lowest crude death rate with 3,4‰ in 2012.

46,2% of death events were occurred in 75 years of age and over
In 2012, the highest proportion with 46,2% in death events was seen in 75+ age group. On the other hand, the lowest proportion with 0,5% in death events was seen in 10-14 age group.
When deaths were examined by age group and sex, it was seen that sex differences between age groups could be clearly observed in 2012. Number of male deaths exceeds number of female deaths in each age group except the oldest cohort (75 years of age and over). This difference between males and females had increased as age increases after the 15-19 age group, and peaked at the 60-64 age group.
14 845 infant death events were occurred
While the number of infant deaths was 14 511 in 2011, this number increased to 14 845 in 2012. While infant mortality rate was 11,7‰ in 2011, this rate was 11,6‰ in 2012. It means that while the number of infant deaths was 11,7 per thousand live births in 2011, the number of infant deaths was 11,6 per thousand live births in 2012. According to the SR Level 1, Southeast Anatolia Region had the highest infant mortality rate with 15,7‰ and Istanbul Region had the lowest infant mortality rate with 8,6‰ in 2012.
Deaths by Age Group and Sex, 2011-2012 65,9% of infant deaths died before completing their first month
In 2012, 65,9% of infants dying before completing one year old died before completing their first month. On the other hand, it was seen that infants dying before completing their first month died in first day with 13,7%, 1-6 days old with 33,3% and 7-29 days old with 18,9%. Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) has started to publish death statistics for the whole Turkey by using death registers in the Central Population Administrative System (MERNIS) database and cause of death data collected by TurkStat since 2009. Death statistics are revised retrospectively because MERNIS has a dynamic structure. Death statistics for 2011 were revised date as of February 28, 2013 and also death statistics for 2012 were announced at the same as of date in the news release.
