334 billion 751 million TL was spent for social protection
Expenditure on social protection accounted for 334 billion 751 million TL in 2016 by increasing 19.5% according to the expenditure in 2015. Expenditure on social protection consisted 98.3% of payments for social protection benefits (328 billion 917 million TL). The largest expenditure on social protection benefits was the old age function with 162 billion 140 million TL followed by those related to the sickness/health care function with 91 billion 318 million TL.

The social protection expenditure accounted for 12.8 % of GDP
Expenditure on social protection accounted for 12.8% of gross domestic products (GDP) in 2016. Expenditure on social protection benefits recorded as 12.6% of GDP. When the expenditures on risks or needs were considered, the expenditure on old age function was the largest with 6.2% of GDP followed by those related to the sickness/health care function with 3.5% of GDP and survivors function with 1.5% of GDP.

Means-tested benefits represented 8.4% of the total social protection benefits
The largest part of the means-tested benefits was provided under the disability function with 32.1% followed by family/children with 31.9% and sickness/health care with 17.2%.
Cash benefits represented 67.8% of the total social protection benefits
The majority of the cash benefits was related to old age function 72.2% followed by survivors function 17.7% and the unemployment function with 3.5%.
Government contributions constituted 40.7% of social protection receipts
Government contributions accounted for 40.7% of social protection receipts. Social contributions by employers' represented 27.7% and protected people social contributions constituted 26.5% of social protection receipts.
Number of pension beneficiaries accounted for 12 million 829 thousand people
While the number of pension beneficiaries (old age, survivors and disability pension) were 12 million 536 thousand in 2015, it became 12 million 829 thousand by increasing 2.3% in 2016. Number of old age and survivors pension beneficiaries reached to 11 million 992 thousand in 2016 while it was 11 million 707 thousand in 2015.
