In 2016, a total expenditure of 160 billion 873 million TL was made with an increase of 18.9% compared to 2015. When evaluated according to educational levels, education expenditures increased at most in upper secondary education with 31.6% and tertiary education with 20.3% in 2016 compared to the previous year.

The 74.2% of education expenditure in Turkey in 2016 was spent by the public sources. The share of education expenditure by households was 18.8%.
Largest expenditure amount was spent on tertiary education by public and private institutions
Public institutions spent 29.8% of their total education expenditure (31 billion 348 million TL) for tertiary education, 28.1% of total (29 billion 524 million TL) for primary school. The 43.3% of education expenditure (11 billion 613 million TL) spent by private institutions was for tertiary education and 32.6% for upper secondary education (8 billion 752 million TL).
Education expenditure per student was 7 thousand 449 TL
While the education expenditure per student in Turkey in 2015 was 6 thousand 382 TL, this amount reached to a total of 7 thousand 449 TL in 2016.
Largest amount of expenditure per student was spent for tertiary education
When evaluated according to educational levels, the highest level of education expenditure per student in 2016 was for tertiary education with 14 thousand 201 TL.
Highest increase in education expenditure per student was observed at upper secondary education
The total education expenditure per student was increased by 16.7%. The level of education which reached the highest increase in 2016 compared to 2015 about education expenditure by financing source was upper secondary education with 30.7%. This was followed by primary school with 20.2%.

Education expenditure does not cover the spending for non-formal education activities excluding the ones related to the formal education.
