81 thousand tonnes of medical waste was collected
Within the scope of the survey, 1 527 health institutions, which were in operation by the end of 2016, were covered. All of them indicated that medical waste was collected separately.
67.2% of medical waste was disposed of in controlled landfill sites
Of the total medical waste 67.2% was disposed of in controlled landfill sites, 17.3% in municipal dumping sites and 15.5% in incineration plants. It was determined that almost all of the medical waste was sterilized prior to disposal in controlled landfill sites and municipal dumping sites.
40.1% of medical waste was collected in three metropolitan cities
Out of total medical waste, 24.1% was collected from health institutions in İstanbul, 9.3% in Ankara, and 6.7% in İzmir.

Health institutions refers to institutions listed as producers of large quantities of waste (university hospitals and their clinics, general purpose hospitals and their clinics, maternity hospitals and their clinics, military hospitals and their clinics) in Annex-1 of Medical Waste Control Regulation dated 22.07.2005 and numbered 25883 which was in force in 2016. The purpose of the survey is to identify the amount of infectious, pathological, cutlery-penetrating, etc. medical waste generated by health institutions.
